Millions of Americans suffer from tooth loss. If you’re a part of that group, you know from experience how much it can affect your quality of life. Luckily, there are many ways you can restore your smile and enjoy a full bite once again. Dental implants are one of the most permanent methods of tooth replacement, making them an excellent option to consider. However, are you unsure whether it’s the right option for you? Here are some basic criteria that can help you decide if you’re a good dental implant candidate.
Dental implants are known to provide unmatched stability and durability because they’re surgically inserted into the jawbone. However, your gums must be in optimal condition to keep the implants firmly anchored in place. If they’re compromised in any way (i.e., gum disease), they won’t successfully hold the titanium posts in position, and it can eventually result in implant failure. That said, patients with unhealthy gums will need to undergo periodontal therapy beforehand to become eligible for treatment.
Even though dental implants are relatively low maintenance compared to other tooth-replacement methods, they’re by no means indestructible. For your new smile to last as long as possible, you must practice a consistent and solid oral hygiene routine. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, rinsing with mouthwash, and visiting your dentist every six months are critical for successful treatment. If you’re unable to commit to good dental health, you might not qualify for implants.
For dental implants to stay in place firmly and permanently, they must fuse properly with the surrounding bone tissue. Because they get their strength directly from the jawbone, they’re able to provide patients with stability and a strong bite force. However, potential candidates must have sufficient bone density to begin with. Otherwise, the procedure may not be successful, causing implants to become loose or fall out altogether.
It may come as no surprise that chronic diseases can create risks for dental implant patients. For example, those with diabetes have higher chances of experiencing dental implant failure because their condition interferes with osseointegration, which is the fusion between the implant and the jawbone. Other conditions like heart disease and sleep apnea can create complications during surgery by interfering with anesthesia. Therefore, a good dental implant candidate should be free from chronic diseases and other health conditions.
Drinking alcohol and using tobacco products are not only bad for your overall health, but your dental health as well. These poor habits can negatively affect your mouth’s ability to heal after dental implant surgery. Excessively drinking alcohol can lead to dry mouth, inhibit blood clotting, and even result in bone loss. Also, smoking and using tobacco products can increase your risk of gum disease.
Do you meet all the criteria on this list? If not, that’s okay – it’s never too late to improve your oral health and make yourself the ideal dental implant candidate!
